65kg vs 75kg rider

Post  kumagako on Tue Mar 01, 2011 12:57 pm

i took the liberty on graphing the power difference between a 65kg rider and 75kg rider on the upslopes and downslopes.

Held the 65kg rider @ 220w in the given slope
Varied the power of the 75kg rider until it matches the 65kg rider speed at 220w

Both bikes are 9kg and assumed to be in good working condition.
There is also no simulated headwind or tailwind.

Took the difference of power of both riders and graphed it against slope.

There is no draft advantage also.

OBSERVATIONS:

1. The 65kg rider needs to pedal 30w more match the 75kg rider on a -3% grade.

2. At 0% grade (flat roads), the difference is only 5 watts which is roughly 1 second advantage per 2 kilometers.

3. The advantage is only 8 watts on a 3% grade. If at the 8w above the threshold the 75kg rider can be dropped after ~15mins.

4. 3% to 6% has a steep response from 8 to 28watts.

5. Above 6%, the power advantage seems to flatten at 30w.

70kg vs 72kg DATA (same conditions)

-3% = -5watts
0% = +1watts
+3% = +4watts
+6% = +5watts
+8% = +6watts
+9% = +6watts
+12% = +6watts
+15% = +6watts

QUICK LOOK WOULD SAY THAT AT GRADES GREATER THAN 6%, EACH KG DISADVANTAGE WILL COST YOU 3 WATTS!!! nagkamali

For practical application....

CLIMBING GENTING HIGHLANDS.... (ave ~6% grade) a 3w advantage is equal to 1 minute advantage to the top
