SINGAPORE - Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim has said that he will be making consultations with various groups to seek improvements on cycling issues.

In a posting on Facebook today, Dr Faishal wrote about his new appointment as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, where he was assigned a few areas under land transport, of which one of them was cycling issues.

He wrote: "Specifically on cycling, and on the related issue of road safety, I am saddened by Mr Freddy Khoo's death. There have also been other fatal accidents in the past, and a death is always one too many. I believe our roads can be made safer, and this calls for both motorists and cyclists to observe traffic rules and drive/cycle in a safe and considerate manner. I intend to meet the various stakeholders, including interest groups from cyclists, motorists and even pedestrians - who have also expressed some concerns about their safety with more cyclist-pedestrian interactions. I will also discuss and seek inputs from my fellow MPs who are passionate about cycling.

"I will be making these consultations in the coming months. I will also build on the various cycling initiatives which have been done in the past, especially under Mr Teo Ser Luck's leadership when he was Senior Parl Sec in MOT, who had done much to promote cycling as a mode of transport. Certainly, where we can make improvements or if there are feasible ideas which can be tried out, we should certainly be prepared to have an open mind and either implement or start with some pilots. I think a dedicated lane for cyclist is ideal, but will this stop the accidents ? yes/no? The answer is nobody knows. It's like, you're opening up an express lane for fast and leisure cyclist all squeezed in on a narrow strip just next to a real road for motorist. I'm pretty sure a typical weekend ride will have a familiar holler like " Getting thru " or the familiar " On your right" on these roads. And what if a simple maneuver such as this turns out to be unsuccessful? nagkamali
So, I think 2 cycling lanes for fast and slow shld be considered as well. Oh almost forgot, MTB/Foldies/ road also be segreggated???

Corek ka dyan sir, dapat nga kino cunsult nila eh yung mga taong real cyclist... or perhaps a good program will be, to let all the lorry/taxi drivers get through a crash course on road cycling. Para magka roon sila ng idea kung ano pakiramdam ng tinututukan ng lorry sa likuran habang nagba bike..and of course its not always the fault of the drivers. Siklesta marami din may sala siyempre
